27 August 2016

Oh dear, it’s been a while since I last updated – but hey, that’s good really as it indicates that things are pretty stable for me right now. So stable in fact that I asked my oncologist if I could get a second opinion on the stability or otherwise of my left hip as it has been 12 months since this was formally checked. He has humoured me and I now have an appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon in Warrnambool in 3 weeks time. And no, I’m not expecting things to have changed, but seeing I already do some walking with a frame, I’d like his opinion as to how risky he considers this to be. ‘Walking’ is handy for me as I can manage some steps etc and getting in and out of the car is easier (if I’m on my own) than from the wheelchair. I’ve also been doing a bit more driving – not on my own as yet, but it’s a nice feeling of independence.

Meanwhile my morning ablutions routine has changed somewhat. I am no longer hirsute (all over that is…) so hair styling is no longer necessary. Neither is shaving my legs or plucking out the odd stray chin hair. But it means that drawing in my eye brows has taken on more significance than ever  before, as it is most important to avoid uneven brows, or certain brow shapes that might give one a startled or questioning look.
The next part of my morning routine is the selection of a hat. Hat first, then clothing to match. Considering that the only hats I had previously owned had been sunhats, it’s amazing that I now have a whole shelf devoted to my lovely selection of hats - beanies, felt hats, scarves etc - most of which have been given to me by thoughtful friends. No wig yet but that might change soon when the hospital cancer support has them available for hire.

I keep busy doing computer powerpoint assistance for church services etc and we continue to go for little drives around the place, and have had many sightings of the whale and her calf that have made the Portland waters their home for over a month now.
Soon it’ll be time to check on seasonal orchids in the local bushland too.

Men Shopping
A wife asks her husband, “Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk, and if they have avocados, get 6.”
A short time later, her husband came home with 6 cartons of milk.
His wife asks him, “Why did you buy 6 cartons of milk?”
He replied, “They had avocados.”
(ps if you are a woman, you may need to read this again. Men will get it the first time.)

11 August 2016

A relatively quiet week for us, but interspersed with some lovely visits.

From Port Lincoln, Coral (Brian’s sister) and Vivian came for a few days, and we tried very hard to teach them how to relax, Pfeiffer style. I never tire of taking our visitors for a drive around the Portland port where there is always something interesting to watch, or around the local beaches where you just might spot a whale, or seals, or simply watch the gannets flying low over the sea.

Then we had a delightful and unexpected visit from Lois Windridge (nee Kempe) and her sister Eunie. I always marvel at the ways our lives can interact over the years. The recent resurrection of an old photo shows Lois and myself as young children, along with our families, at a confirmation gathering at Hamilton. Then we re-met many years later at Box Hill church, before getting to know each other much better during the Compassion tour to The Philippines. Amazing!

Health-wise all remains stable. So much so that I decided to slowly reduce one of my (many) pain-relief drugs. I gave myself all of 4 days before going back up to the original dose again! That really surprised me – and made me realise what a fine line there is in managing the pain in my lower back and left hip, and how thankful I am that there are drugs that keep pain at bay without turning me into a complete zombie.

Meanwhile we’re enjoying watching the Olympics (that’s if we don’t slip into ‘nanna-nap’ mode - although there's no chance of that after watching Kyle Chalmers come from behind to win a swimming gold medal).
